Even though Epcot Center opened to the public on October 1, 1982, the 3-day official grand opening celebration was held three weeks later concluding on Sunday, October 24th. An entertainment spectacular which included the All-American College Marching Band, the Grand Opening Orchestra and 23 international performing groups was staged on the cool fall day. An American flag, sent by President Reagan and which had flown over the White House, was raised during the dedication ceremonies and a message from President and Mrs. Reagan was read. A jet flyover by the Florida National Guard was another special moment. But in the spirit of international cooperation, one of the most memorable moments featured participants of the international performing groups gathering around the Fountain of World Friendship in CommuniCore Plaza to add water from their home countries.
